New Member Profile: Brandon Malkow

New member Brandon Malkow with a 40” fish he found in a West Central Illinois stream. 

We caught up with one of our newest members, Brandon Malkow in the middle of his football season at Western Illinois University where he is building an impressive resume as a red-shirt sophomore starting offensive lineman. Malkow is a former student at Beloit Turner High School where he was a stand-out athlete specializing in football. He found musky fishing and is taking advantage of a little fished resource near his campus in West-Central Illinois. 

BMC: What got you hooked on musky fishing? 

Brandon Malkow: This May I was able to go out with [Club Member] Matt Bright for the first time. We didn’t get any fish but I had one follow. Just watching that beautiful fish follow the bait in the water created a fire in me to catch one! 

BMC: How did you get on em? 

Brandon Malkow: I don’t have a boat, but I’ve found a small river down where I go to school in Illinois where I can wade the creek and its full of musky. 

BMC: Favorite bait? 

Brandon Malkow: My favorite bait is a bull dawg. 

BMC: Best memory? 

Brandon Malkow: Catching my first musky after putting in many many hours and trips with no luck but coming so close, then I finally caught one. The joy and pride I felt was great! 

BMC: Fishy goals? 

Brandon Malkow: My goal is to keep getting to know the sport and getting better at hunting down these beasts. One day hopefully I’ll catch a 50 incher!
